As much as well all love our main characters in stories (after all, it’s their story), I have to admit that sometimes the side characters steal the show. In fact, sometimes they really do what with some of the spin-off we get lately, such as Love & Luck, The Bookworm Crush, and Not Like the Movies. I love seeing these side characters develop more and get their own stories. Unfortunately, a lot of them don’t get the individual love they deserve.
I’m one of those people who tends to love the side characters more than the main ones 9 times out of 10. I’m all about the side characters, because without them you just have two characters and that doesn’t make much for a story. I think every main character needs a witty best friend who will eventually get their own story.
So, in honor of the side characters, here are some of my favorites!

Ginny Weasley // Harry Potter series
Let me start off with saying that book Ginny is amazing, and I will fight to defend that statement. I was disappointed at how she was portrayed in the movies because in the books she has so much snark and fire to her personality, which is why I love her as a character (and probably why Harry fell in love with her, duh).
The way she was able to hold her own in battle just showed how much fight she had in her, but also had that loving side when it came to her family and friends. She shows so much character development in the books, going from a shy girl with a celebrity crush to an outgoing and independent young woman who wasn’t afraid to speak her mind.

Chloe // Waiting For Tom Hanks
Chloe was everything you love in a best friend – sarcastic, witty, but also completely cares for Annie. She had me laughing out loud while I read Waiting For Tom Hanks and I was so excited when I found out she was getting her own book. I can’t wait to see how her relationship with Nick (possibly) blossoms!

Fred & George Weasley // Harry Potter
Need I say more? Pretty much everyone loves these two pranksters and they provided so many laughs in both the movies and books. Right off the bat when they trick their mother into thinking she mixed them up had me loving them at first read/sight. Naturally, I was devastated at Fred’s death and I still haven’t forgiven who-know-who for killing him off. The Weasley twins are always going to be a set of favorite characters of mine.

Ezra // Two Can Keep a Secret
Ezra honestly needed some more time in this book. He didn’t have much of a story of his own, but was more there to support his sister (obviously). I think his character has a lot of potential for his own story at some point. He was definitely outspoken, and I found him to be quite funny at times, especially when he’s paired up with Mia.

Evie // Descendants movies/novels
Though Evie wasn’t my favorite character at first when I saw Descendants, she became my favorite by the end of the third movie. She’s honestly not given as much love on screen or in the books as she should have gotten. Out of all the Villain Kids that are plucked from the Isle of the Lost, she shows the most character development in the series. She goes from thinking she has to be the prettiest, fairest in the land and that the only way to happiness is to marry a prince to finding her own self-worth without having to snag a prince and that being smart isn’t an unattractive quality in women. She becomes a successful business woman with her own fashion line and falls for the son of one of her mother’s enemies, despite that he’s not a prince. But he’s her prince and that’s all that matters. She also becomes a mother-figure to her friends, making sure they’re okay whenever something happens and often being the voice of reason (especially in the third movie/later novels) to get everyone to work together for good.

So those are just a handful of my favorite side characters. I’m sure there are plenty of more that I just can’t think of because it’s been a while. Maybe I’ll do a follow up post at some point.
Who are some of your favorite side characters?

One of my favorite side characters is Marlee Tames from The Selection Series!! She’s the best friend that you wish you had in your life!!! I was glad that we got to see more of her in her own Novella The Favorite!! 😀

Movie Ginny was so… underwhelming 😦
I loved Sam (LOTR) because Frodo seemed so starry-eyed and naive, and Sam was always the one with good discernment. Sam is probably the only thing that saved Frodo from Gollum. Sam was also very caring and loving with Frodo, truly an amazing friend! 🙂

I love Fred and George Weasley too! You know you’re going to have a laugh pretty much every time they appear on the page or screen. I really like book Ginny too, but I totally agree that film Ginny wasn’t that great. She lost a lot of what made her so great in the books!
