Weird Happenings at the Library, Vol. 1

I’m going to start a new series based on things that happen at the library.  No one will be named and I won’t be ranting about the things that upset me.  The posts will just be the things I find funny that happen while I’m working or I hear about after my day off.  Things that you really have to see to believe, but honestly guys… I can’t make this stuff up if I tried.

WEIRD HAPPENINGS AT THE LIBRARY, ISSUE 1

1. Mac Desktop

Last year a guy comes in and sits in the reading room to work on something, as usual.  Only this time, he brings in a 24″ Mac computer.  A desktop computer… not a laptop.  I nearly died laughing when I saw it (after I got back to my station for the night).

2. Steal yo’ Doorbell

One day we’re getting the library set up in the morning before opening and we’d had an early delivery.  Unfortunately, the UPS guy had to wait an extended time because we could not hear him knocking.  When we finally saw him there and let him in, we realized our doorbell was missing.

3. I Do Not Work Here

I’m sitting behind a desk doing something on the computer (probably a book display poster) and a guy comes up and asks if I work here.  I usually get this question while I’m putting books away, but not while I’m behind a work desk, so I looked him dead in the eye and said, “No.” so then he says okay and starts walking away (I did stop him and said I do work here after all).  This has happened a few more times since then, and I have no idea why.

4. Number One

One of my co-workers was checking the cameras and sees someone by her car, so she pulls up that camera to see a lady drop her pants and tinkle right next to the car.

5. Members Only

It’s not really a weird happening, and it’s something I hear all the time, but I can’t get over hearing people call themselves a “member of the library.”  I know that you need a card to access most of our resources, but saying it in that way makes it seem like we’re an exclusive country club or that you have to pay to get a library card.

Anyway, that is the first issue of “Weird Happenings at the Library” here on my blog!  I’ll continue to post these periodically as things happen or as I remember instances from the past four and a half years.
