There were a lot of new books I read last year, and with that, a lot of new authors. Some I wasn’t sure I’d like as they’ve got all this hype with them, but I’m glad to say that with very few exceptions, I did love a lot of these authors and I look forward to reading more of their books.

Coming up with this list made me not only excited to read more of these authors’ books, but also excited to see which authors I’ll discover this year.

10 New to Me Authors I Discovered in 2021

Diana Peterfreund

I started her Clue Mystery trilogy last year, as the first two books were out and the third one came out later in 2021 (which I read earlier this month). I highly recommend the series to those who love boarding schools and mysteries.

Maureen Johnson

Another boarding school mystery series got me hooked on Ms. Johnson. Last January I read the Truly Devious series and I’ve had 13 Little Blue Envelopes on my NOOK device for a while. Maybe now that I’ve read some of her work, I’ll be more likely to read that ebook this year.

Soman Chainani

Another author, another series. The School for Good and Evil is a great series that I’m still reading, and really have enjoyed so far. It’s a great read for those who love fantasy and magic schools.

Tirzah Price

I have to thank this lovely author for introducing me to the classic characters, Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy, in her retelling of Pride and Prejudice with a murder mystery twist. I’m looking forward to the rest of this series and the other books she’ll be twisting up.

Jane Austen

I’m very late to the party with Ms. Austen, but I haven’t read many classics. I gave this well-known classic author a shot with Pride and Prejudice (after reading the retelling from Tirzah Price) and absolutely loved the story. I even bought two more of her books last year in anticipation of reading them very soon.

Ali Novak

Reading My Life With the Walter Boys was a fun experience as she gave us this great cast of characters. It was a book that I’d known of for so long and when I finally read it, I kicked myself for not reading it sooner.

J.P. Delaney

Different than most of the other authors, Delaney is an adult mystery writer and the book Playing Nice caught my attention, and I loved it despite a slow beginning. I’m not sure if I’ll read any other books by Delaney, but I guess I’ll see if any other books catch me like that one did.

Kara Thomas

I’m a little afraid to read any more of her books because I’m not sure they’ll live up to That Weekend, which according to one of my coworkers, is her best book yet. I am going to read The Cheerleaders eventually, maybe this year even, but I already think That Weekend will be my favorite by Thomas.

Sarah Henning

Throw Like a Girl was a great read and if Henning is a prolific young-adult sports fiction writer, then I know I’ll be reading more of her work. Even if it’s not sport-related, I’ll still read other books by her. I loved her style.

Alexis Bass

While An Education in Ruin wasn’t one of my favorites of the year, it had a good plot and I liked the little flashforwards she had. I’m willing to read more of her books, but I do hope I enjoy them more than that particular one.
